Let me begin by telling you a little more about myself:
I Graduated with an MBA from Babson in 1999. For the next couple of years after graduation, life was only up and up. In fact life was great for me! I was living in one of the most prominent neighborhoods in the Boston area, I drove the sports car I wanted and had money to do anything I chose to. At that time I was a corporate executive at a prosperous high-tech company.

One Monday Evening, I'll never forget that gloomy day, I had just gotten home from just another day at the job, when I got a phone call. It was the CEO and he told me, that I shouldn't come to work the next day and that he would call to tell me when I can go and pickup my things.

I was in absolute shock! If you've ever been in a similar situation, you know the feelings I was experiencing and the thoughts gushing in my head. Anger, confusion, frustration, claustrophobia all at once. My lungs were running out of air, my head was spinning I had to sit down.

Had I done something wrong? Had I been mixed up in some kind of a corporate scandal? What was going on? My first reaction was to call my friend and colleague Michael. We were pals, I had arranged for him to get a management position at the company.

After my first sentence, he cut me off short. He had also received the same call. It was some sort of relief that it wasn't me. Something must be happening with the company.

The next day we found out that the company had been acquired and everyone in upper and middle management was getting laid-off. Well that's not so bad? Is it? I'll make some phone calls, post resumes and after several lucrative job offers I’ll be back in the corporate world in no time. In the meantime, there is workers comp and besides, my wife (also with a Babson MBA) still had her job. She was an executive for a really big company, and there was no chance of them going under.

On Thursday, after spending a lazy day looking at job postings and talking to friends and colleagues at other companies, my wife came home earlier than usual. She had been crying. Turned out she had been laid off too!

The all too familiar feelings of anger, confusion, frustration and claustrophobia, which I had experienced only two days prior suddenly rushed back and overtook me. I do not remember much of what happened in the next few days. All I recall is dim lights, eerie silence and as if the whole world had suddenly turned against us and was about to crash down on us and crush us.

For the next several months and year, instead of getting better, things seemed to get worse, we both worked odd jobs on and off, our income was diminishing, I had to sell my car (at a loss). The times we spent in parties and with friends, turned into times for checking newspaper ads and searching Internet job sites, endlessly sending resumes and occasionally receiving an "encouraging" email with a negative reply, which wished us luck in our job search.

To cut this side of the story short – it all ended in our divorce a year and a half later. What had happened? What had changed? The dream-life we once led, which so many fellow Americans aspire to, had been flushed down the toilet with a loud and prolonged, swirling, downward spiraling motion of events.

After agonizing for some time, I decided to once and for all find out why some people can get the job they want at the salary they desire by having employers practically beg them to come work for them while the rest of us are left with the jobs, which these "top" guys didn't fill.

After continuous research I discovered that this phenomenon applies to executive jobs, technicians, engineers, administrators… practically all the jobs out there. Finally I discovered the simple secret that was in front of my eyes all the time. The secret was in how these "top" guys spoke, the way they moved and behaved and the tone of voice which they used during interviews. It was all in the “how” and not in “what” they talked about.

Then, there was Danny.

He was a strange one!

During college, he dressed fancy and acted very cool but was a mediocre student. He had a system for trading homework, cheated on tests, chose project groups where he could do the least amount of work possible but would get a top grade because of the other people on the team. We all thought that he would fail miserably in life after college. His tactics were despicable, he was most definitely not the type of person that anyone looked up to as an example of success.

During my 4th month of unemployment, I accidentally ran into him downtown. He looked sharp and full of himself as always. I connivingly asked him where he worked as I expected him to be looking for a job and thought that he was going to an interview since he was dressed in a suit.

You should have seen the shocked look on my face when he explained that he was in town just for 2 days and that he worked for a Bank in Paris. The slimy little rat Danny who cheated his way through college and who everyone despised was working for a Bank? In Paris?

I thought that nothing could make me feel worse about my situation until… he hinted at what his salary was. He was making 3 times what I made at my last position. To top it off, he flew all over the world First Class stayed at 5 star hotels and ate at the classiest restaurants all at company expenses.

I think that my jaw finally hit the cold pavement when he told me that he planned on staying with his Bank because "they really appreciated" all of his efforts and usually gave him the day off after transcontinental trips so that he can get some rest after all the hard work he was doing.

The thing was, that he was responsible for data-gathering and financial analysis at perspective clients and partners. This was something that one of my subordinates used to do at my last position and I considered rather straight forward.

"How did you get this position?" I asked

"We seemed to hit it off with the guy who interviewed me. I was interviewing for another position but they said that it was a formality since they had already pre-selected who they wanted to hire. They hadn't yet opened my position but I got him to pull some strings for me and recommend me for the job."

Pull some strings? This was starting to sound like the Sopranos.

"What are you? Connected?" I asked him.

He laughed "come-on Vlad, you know I'm not. Like I said, we seemed to hit it off with the HR guy."

I was stumped! Sneaky Danny had managed to talk his way into a stellar job with a colossal salary which he spent very little of since most of his expenses were paid by his company.

I on the other hand was a much better student, much more likely to succeed and was unemployed for the 4th month straight.

How in the world can this happen? I fell into a depression, I think that this is the point when my marriage hit the rocks.

At first I thought about how unfair Life, God, Fate were to me. I kept thinking about how good the scum-bag Danny had it and how bad things were for me.

One day, several weeks later I came to the realization that I am the only one in control of my destiny and the only thing I can do is find a way out of my pinch. If Danny could get a dazzling job, so could I! I started researching fields like interviewing, career counseling, psychology, hypnosis, NLP, subliminal persuasion, influence and on and on.

I interviewed for many, many positions just to try the different tactics, behaviors, responses etc…

After 3 years of hard work, I finally found the secret!

It was so simple and so in front of my eyes it's scary!

So what is this secret you ask?

The secret to getting the job of your dreams is first in agreeing to change your tactic from the nameless and faceless way in which you approach the whole job application process. The second is in giving value, you have to be seen as not only competent (that goes without saying) but as a person who adds value – beyond the job description, beyond the work-hours. You have to determine what problems or concerns they are trying to solve by hiring someone at this position. You then simply persuade them that you are that person. As I said earlier – this is what you do and the secret to your success is in the “how”. So – read on.

Employers are looking for people who look, sound and behave in a certain way. Never mind all the "be yourself" and "we are very friendly and informal at our company" nonsense, that's crap (pardon my French)!
There will be a series of questions which they will ask you. We actually know, not only what they are but also what and HOW you should answer to score lots of points.
All this Job Interview information is useless if you are not getting any job interviews in the first place. What do you do to get an interview? Everything else is good stuff but it counts for nothing if you are not getting interview calls. To get interviews:

Pre-select the jobs you apply for.
Contact them in the appropriate way (no, email is not the only way to do this) If you contact them the right way it greatly increases your chances for consideration.
The right cover letter or cover page. This is where you can show your true merit.
When you get an email or call to pre-screen you , you have to use the right words in the right context in the right tone of voice to get to the next level.
When asked: "When would you be available to come in for an interview?", the wrong answer can outright kill your chances and put you at the bottom of the list.
If you are late and react in the wrong way or give the wrong excuse, "you can't be fired cause you won't be hired". Reacting in the right way will actually increase your chances of getting the job despite the fact that you are late.
